The Transfer of Private Sewers took place on October 1st 2011, when the ownership of and responsibility for private sewers and lateral drains in England and Wales transferred from the property owner, to the regulated water and sewerage companies. This represented a shift in ownership of over 200,000 km of pipe, and many millions of lateral pipe connections.
These pipes mainly 100 and 150mm diameter range from salt glazed ware manufactured by the likes of Henry Doulton of Lambeth in the 1840's through pitch fibre and asbestos cement to modern structural walled plastic pipes. Also, until the 1960's salt glazed ware pipes made by local manufacturers dominated the small diameter drainage pipe market and the outside diameter of these pipes varied considerably from maker to maker. Typically the outside diameter of DN100 pipes varies from 110 to 136 mm and for DN150 pipes the range is 160 to 190 mm and as such they present a new challenge to the contractors responsible for the repair and maintenance of public sewers.
Previously these sewers and drains had been repaired in accordance with the requirements of the Building Regulations which allowed the use of any flexible coupling complying with a European Standard hence couplings without shear bands, Drain couplings, and Adaptor couplings were routinely used for both repairs and new connections. With the change of ownership comes the requirement for all work to comply with the requirements of the Civil Engineering Specification for the Water Industry (CESWI) and therefore for Standard couplings with shear bands which comply with WIS 4-41-01 to used.
These Standard couplings have limited flexibility when jointing pipes of different outside diameters, usually about 12mm, and this is particularly a problem when dealing with the range of outside diameters found in these small diameter sewers and drains. This means that a contractor looking to make a single visit to site to repair a small diameter sewer or drain using traditional Standard couplings would have to carry a plethora of couplings and bushes in his van to ensure that this is possible. Not only is this expensive but there is always the possibility that a particular coupling or bush might be missing at the time it is needed delaying the job and adding extra cost.
All this expense and the worry of not having the right coupling at the right time are eliminated by using the new GENIUS coupling from MISSION COUPLINGS.
Available in four sizes DN100, DN125, DN150 and DN200 the clever integral bushes mean that each coupling will connect to any pipe within its designated size range whether made by Henry Doulton in 1840 or Polypipe in 2011. The two integral bushes can be folded out and removed on one or both sides depending on the application.
The DN100 coupling will join pipe sizes in the range of 108 to 137 whereas the DN150 coupling covers the size range 158 to 192mm outside diameter.
